How many times have you looked in your pantry or cabinet and not found an ingredient or a spice that you need for a recipe? Probably more than we all can count! Here are some baking substitutes that you can use to replace those items that you don't have or have "magically disappeared" from your collection.
Common Baking ingredients:
All-Purpose Flour:
If you can not find All-purpose flour, here some substitutes try these:
Gluten-Free Flour
Recommended brand: King Aurthur
Cake Flour
Recommended brand: Swansdown
DO NOT USE Rice Flour. The reason why you do not want to use Rice Flour is that it doesn't have the proper rising agents to help your cake, or cupcakes rise! When baking you want your batter to cook in the oven with a nice spring to it!
Vegetable Oil:
If you run out of Vegetable oil, here are some alternatives!
Safflower
Coconut oil
Canola Oil
Grapeseed Oil
Avocado Oil
These five alternatives all have similar ingredients that have the right amount of fat content to help create the right mixology between your dry and wet ingredients.
Sugar:
Oh no! There is no more loose baking sugar in your cabinet, what do you have around that house that could replace sugar? In place of loose sugar, you can honey, agave nectar, or maple syrup.
These alternatives will have a different viscosity (thickness) level than loose sugar, but they all have the same percentage of sweetness depending on how much you are using. So make sure that you are careful of those conversion measurements!
Milk:
For milk substitutes, you can use, original flavored almond milk, original flavored oat milk, or evaporated milk. The ratio for condensed milk and water in equal parts... half a cup of evaporated milk and half a cup of water.
Spices:
All Spice:
If you do not have All-Spice in your spice cabinet, you are likely to have the three ingredients that makeup, allspice. Those ingredients are Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Clove. When making your homemade allspice, make sure that you use equal parts. One Tablespoon of Cinnamon, 1 Tablespoon of Nutmeg, and 1 Tablespoon of Clove.
Other:
If a recipe calls for walnuts and you are allergic or just don't like them, you can substitute them for pecans.
