Did you know that frosting cupcakes started in the 1920s? Since then, there have been so many ways and techniques that you can use frost cupcakes. Some techniques that you can use: a butter knife, a piping bag with different tips, or use a zip lock bag! Whichever way you frost, your cupcakes will come out beautiful. In this post, we will be talking about the 5 different ways to frost a cupcake. Let's jump into it and learn the art of frosting a cupcake.
The Butter Knife
The first way that you can frost a cupcake is by using a butter knife. This technique I find is the easiest way to frost a cupcake because it's all in the wrist! To frost a cupcake this way, you will need 3 things: frosting of your choice, a cupcake, and a butter knife.
Next, take a medium-sized blob of frosting and place it in the center of the cupcake. Then grab your butter knife using the back edge of your knife, move your wrist in a zig-zag motion to spread the frosting on the top of the cupcakes. To create a smooth edge, take the flat side of the knife and press gently as you go around the cupcake turning it slightly as you go.
The Piping Bag with tips
There are so many tips that you can use on a piping/decorating bag to create a beautiful design on the top of your cupcakes. The brand that I like to use is Wilton. They have a wide variety of piping tips and accessories for frosting your cupcakes. They make a total of 57 tips to satisfy all of your frosting needs!
They even have demo videos to show you how to use the tips!
The Ziplock Bag
The third way of frosting is by using a ziplock bag. If you do not have a piping bag and changeable decorating tips, using a ziplock bag is a great dupe. Now you can do all of these fun designs with them but you can make a swirl and dots. To make these it depends on how big or small you want them. To make them, you fill your zip block bag with frosting and cut the corner of the zip lock bag depending on the desired thickness.
The Spatula
Another way you can frost a cupcake is with a baking Spatula or an offset spatula. To frost, a cupcake with a baking spatula, grab your cupcake, your frosting, and the baking spatula. Next. take the frosting and take a glob of frosting and place it in the middle of the cupcake and go in a zigzag motion and to make a clean top. Then take your spatula and press down gently and create a line with the spatula. slide the spatula to the left or right, and create a large smooth circle with your hand around the edges for your cupcake to be flat and even.
The Ice Cream/ Cookie Scooper
The last way you can frost a cupcake is with an ice cream scooper or a cookie scooper. I know it seems silly, but it is used to get a perfect dome like a top. To do this, you will need a cupcake, frosting, and coiled ice cream or cookie scooper. Scoop your frosting and squeeze the ice cream scooper and plop it on the center of the cupcake. You can leave it like a domed top or you can take the back of the scooper and gently press down to flatten.
